Welcome to the 10thannual BERMUN2 conference. This year’s conference theme “Dignity and SocialJustice for a Sustainable Future” draws our attention to growing conflictschallenging the international community. It raises fundamental questionsconcerning our society’s prior pursuit of not only inalienable human rights andglobal compromise, but also governments’ varied approaches to legislative, executive and judicial duties. In the age of increasing global diversity, unequal social systems foster the exploitation of workers, the polarization ofsociety and the distancing from concepts such as dignity and social justice. Thus, tragic events such as the attack of the staff of the satirical magazine“Charlie Hebdo” threaten the foundation of the society we live in.

Over the course of thenext two days it will be your task to assume the role of diplomats and striveto find solutions to your respective committee topics in consideration of thechallenges emphasized by the conference theme. You will fill the roles of UNrepresentatives and thus become acquainted with both the honorable goals the UNstands for, as well as the obstacles it faces.

BERMUN2 is aconference that depends on each delegate’s effort and hard work. Thepreparation of every delegate, director and student officer allows BERMUN2 tobe an endeavor that may perhaps redefine our perception of political andsocietal norms. Whether it be by questioning the use of drones in the MiddleEast as a means to neutralize the imminent threat of the Islamic State, addressing the issue of child marriage, tackling once again the conflictbetween Bosnia and Herzegovina, or exploring the possibilities technologyoffers the health industry, you will find BERMUN2 to be a source ofintellectual and personal growth. As we jointly aspire to enhance ourunderstanding of the complexity of the conference theme, we will take away fromthe conference the experiences and knowledge to expand our individual horizons.
