Anjali Amelunxen

Assistant President

of the

ICC

Evangelische Schule Frohnau

Dear Judges and Advocates of the ICC,

It is an honour for me to welcome you to this year’s International Criminal Court, where I will serve as Assistant President.

At this year’s conference, the ICC will address The Prosecutor v. Jair Bolsonaro ( The Planet v. Jair Bolsonaro). During the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, deforestation rates in the Amazon rainforest rose significantly, while weakening environmental protections and indigenous land safeguards were widely criticized. As judges, you will examine allegations surrounding the large-scale destruction of the Amazon rainforest during the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro and discuss whether environmental devastation affecting Indigenous populations and global climate stability can amount to crimes against humanity. This case invites Judges as well as Advocates to explore the limits of international criminal law while discussing the responsibilities states and leaders hold toward both people and the environment.

Outside of MUN, I am a grade 10 student at the Ev Frohanu with a strong interest in politics and international affairs, and this will be my eighth conference overall. In my free time, I enjoy playing the piano, spending way too much money on coffee, spending quality time with friends, and discovering new ideas through books, films, and conversation. I am very excited to meet you all in November and look forward to engaging in conversations with everyone!

Sincerely,

Anjali Amelunxen
