Dear Delegates,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to this year’s BERMUN SOCHUM! This year’s overarching theme, Resilient & Sustainable Development to Combat Climate Inequality, is especially pressing in today’s society. Climate change affects the environment, the economy, and the humanitarian landscape of nations. Climate inequality, whether through food insecurity, unequal access to natural resources, or disparities in financing for mitigation, deepens existing social and political polarization around the world.

Our topics this year reflect this issue directly. As multinational corporations tighten their grip on vital natural resources, whole communities are left vulnerable to exploitation and environmental degradation. The privatization of land and water raises urgent questions of responsibility, control, and the extent to which economic power should determine access to essential resources. Similarly, climate change continues to be a massive pressure on the global agricultural systems, with negative impacts being most acutely felt by populations already susceptible to food insecurity and economic instability. Sustainable agriculture is, therefore, a question of justice and human development in the long term.

As one of the Co-Chairs of SOCHUM, I aim to foster a participatory environment where we all contribute to discussions on some of the most pressing issues in today’s society. Diplomacy is the driving force that can lead the world in times of crisis, and I hope all delegates, the leaders of tomorrow, share the same goal of a just and democratic future for all.

On a more personal note, I am a 17-year-old high school student from Thessaloniki, Greece. This BERMUN will mark my 12th conference, and 3rd time serving as a student officer. Outside of MUN, I enjoy dancing (ballet and contemporary), reading, spending time with friends and family, and watching good films. My favorite subjects in school are physics and math, but I am equally passionate about international relations and economics.

I cannot wait to meet you all in November!

Sincerely,

Anna Leonidi
