Dear Judges and Advocates,

I am very pleased to welcome you to the International Court of Justice at BERMUN 2025!

Fitting to our conference theme of “Building a Rules-Based Order to Withstand Autocracy”, we will deliberate on the case of the Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Rwanda on Armed Activities on the Territory of the Congo.

Tensions arose between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda due to military activities in the Great Lakes region, this started during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. The DRC accused Rwanda of military aggression and human rights violations on its territory, including breaches of sovereignty and the involvement in armed conflicts. Despite regional and international efforts to mediate the situation, diplomatic resolutions failed, leading the DRC to file a case against Rwanda at the International Court of Justice in 2002. The DRC claims that Rwanda was responsible for serious violations of international law, including the prohibition of aggression and human rights abuses.

If you have any questions about the ICJ program or conference preparations, feel free to contact me and my co-chairs at bermunicj@googlemail.com.

I am currently a 12th grader at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. In my free time, I like to listen to music, ride my bike, and hang out with my friends. This will be my seventh MUN conference and my fifth conference as part of the student officer team. When I first joined the courts as a judge, I was immediately hooked and couldn't have asked for a better experience in the MUN program.

I look forward to seeing you all in November!

Sincerely,

Christian Grewe
