Dear Delegates,
It is my absolute honor to welcome you to this year’s BERMUN conference!
This year's conference theme is “Resilient and Sustainable Development to Combat Climate Inequality.” The theme centers around the fact that those who create the least pollution often experience the most drastic effects of it. The Global North profits while the Global South loses income, their livelihood, and faces displacement.
This is particularly prevalent in the industrial sector, an issue that the UNIDO will be discussing: “Promoting Responsible Water Use in Industry.” This is especially seen where industry moguls reign, specifically in the Global South, under weak regulations, creating roughly 20% of global freshwater withdrawals. In addition, in regions where water is scarce, industrial companies are often exempt from reducing water consumption during water emergencies, while domestic users face harsh restrictions. The industrial overconsumption of water, in turn, can lead to contamination in water, deeply harming countries that lack the funds to clean it. As well as water scarcity in agriculture, which directly affects crop failure, livestock losses, and declining income for rural communities.
On a more personal note, I am a 10th grader at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. I have lived in Berlin all my life and deeply cherish it. This conference will be my eleventh overall and my first time chairing the GA3. Outside of academics, I enjoy running, cycling, and swimming, as well as baking and hanging out with my friends. Additionally, I love participating in MUN debates since it has enabled me to become a much better writer and given me a different perspective on world events.
I look forward to meeting you all and being part of a truly memorable MUN experience.
Sincerely,
Frida Tischbier
