Dear Delegates of the Economic and Social Council,
It is my absolute honor to welcome you to this year’s BERMUN conference!
The theme of this year’s conference, “Decolonize.”, challenges us to critically examine global systems that continue to shape opportunity, power, and inequality long after the formal end of colonial rule. In today’s interconnected society, decolonization is not only a political process but also an economic one, requiring us to question who benefits from existing structures, whether new or old, and who is left behind.
In ECOSOC, this year's committee topic, “Combating Wealth Inequality,” directly reflects this challenge. Extreme imbalance in wealth around the world is not accidental. These disparities are deeply rooted in historical patterns of forced extraction, exploitation, unequal trade, and financial systems that continue to disadvantage large parts of the Global South. From debt dependency and unfair trade relations to tax avoidance and capital flight, wealth inequality continues to be a serious threat to global stability and sustainable development. As delegates, your task is not only to address the consequences of inequality but also to debate and propose reforms, along with frameworks, that deal with its structural causes.
On a more personal note, I am a 16-year-old proud German-American citizen living in Berlin. I have been attending the John F. Kennedy School since the age of 5, and since then, I have expressed a strong interest in world politics. I spend my free time playing baseball and basketball, hanging out with friends, occasionally playing video games, and reading. I strongly believe that addressing wealth inequality is essential for building a fairer and more stable global order for all societies. I look forward to meeting you all as we tackle these challenges together and, hopefully, end the conference with a strong and effective solution!
Sincerely,
Hamilton Turner
