Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the SC!

Throughout its existence, this body has addressed more than fifty distinct regional and global crises, yet only few have been on its agenda for a longer time than Kashmir. The region has a rich historical heritage and colonial past, being a luxuriant valley competed between Muslim and Hindu states from the 13th century onwards until its incorporation into the British Empire. Following the fall of the British Raj, Kashmir saw itself divided along the region’s cultural and religious cleavages between India, Pakistan, and China. Kashmir needs to develop a shared identity that exceeds cultural, religious, and ethnic divides to foster unity and peace in the region. In this way, the SC’s topic, “Confronting Fragmentation in Kashmir”, aligns with the overarching conference topic of “Fostering Global Citizenship among Identities and Responsibilities”.

As global threats loom, the delegates of the SC have to take swift and decisive action in order to uphold the United Nations Charter and its commitment to peace.

This BERMUN conference marks my 6th time chairing the SC, and my eighth chairing experience overall. I am very excited to meet you, and see the solutions that the SC will come up with.

I come from Turkey and am interested in music, philosophy, sci-fi, and sports and would love to discuss my ideas with you while you are not busy solving the Kashmir conflict.

Cordially,

Kerem Demir Karahan
