Dear Delegates,

Seventy years have passed since the outbreak of the Suez Crisis in the Middle East. Although the conflict, marked by military intervention and diplomatic arbitration, has long been resolved, its political and tactical impact continues to shape the region to this day. Delegates in our committee will have the opportunity to revisit this historic event through a simulation of the crisis. This will not only deepen our understanding of UN mechanisms, but also give us the chance to experience past developments of the United Nations Security Council.

The Suez Crisis represents a monumental event in the declining influence of colonial powers. It is exemplary for the rise of non-Western countries and the assertion of sovereignty during times of decolonization. While engaging with and solving this crisis, you will further explore the impact of decolonization and how it transformed global power relations.

Personally, the Model United Nations has been one of my interests for about three years now, having visited 12 conferences in total. What I especially love about MUN is the otherwise very rare opportunity of meeting people from all around the world and getting to know their perspectives and cultures.

I am 17 years old and attend 12th grade at the John Lennon Gymnasium in Berlin Mitte. Other interests of mine include photography, listening to all kinds of music, working out, playing the piano, and meeting my friends. I’m very excited to be a Student Officer at such a wonderful conference, and, of course, to meet you all in February!

Sincerely,

Lea Hülsenbeck
