Dear Delegates,
It’s my honor to be chairing the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee at BERMUN’s 35th annual conference, with this year's conference theme “Resilient & Sustainable Development to Combat Climate Inequality” becoming only more relevant. Climate change is most commonly talked about on a global scale, and while it’s true that the whole world encounters the effects of global warming, vulnerable populations have been repeatedly disregarded, undermined, and taken advantage of.
In an age where vast amounts of mineral, land, and water sources are in the hands of powerful corporations, driven by the profit-incentive, the urgency to regulate these corporations is greater than ever. These corporations not only strip communities of their only source of survival and culture, but they also impact environmental degradation, acting as catalysts for resource shortages, food insecurity, and the clean water crisis. To further ensure sustainable communities, we need to break this cycle by enforcing transparency in supply chains and empowering indigenous communities with the legal rights to protect their land and environment, while closing any gaps enabling corporations to systematically exploit these valuable natural resources.
On a more personal note, I’m an 11th grader at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, and I couldn't be more excited to be your chair in this upcoming conference! Outside of MUN, my interests range from art to fashion, and as I’m a very social person, I find a lot of joy in meeting and talking to all kinds of new people. I love travelling and, of course, spending time with my friends. I look forward to meeting you all in November!
Sincerely,
Lucy Porter
