Dear Delegates,

Welcome to this year’s Special Conference!

This year’s conference theme will focus on Resilient and Sustainable Development to Combat Climate Inequality. Global warming is rapidly increasing, leaving us to deal with the consequences and navigate the inequalities exacerbated by this issue. Social, political, and economic factors play a role in forming these imbalances. Not only is global warming something that requires us to actively fight against its effects, but it is also a matter that has to be prevented long-term. The SpC topics include both the short- and long-term impacts of climate inequality. The themes are  “Addressing Migration Caused by Climate Change” and “Preventing Environmental Exploitation of Less Economically Developed Countries”.

Global warming increases the risk of natural disasters, like floods and droughts, which leads to the displacement of millions globally. An example of this is Pakistan. Flooding in the country has displaced roughly 8 million people just in the year 2022. There were social consequences of this tragedy, for example, health crises and an increase in violence among the people. Forced migration and displacement, like what happened in Pakistan, are unfortunate and inevitable, but limiting and making it safer is imperative. As a committee, I hope we can have a collaborative and constructive debate to find solutions to this issue.

On a more personal note, I was born in New York and lived there for five years before moving to Germany. I have attended the John F. Kennedy school since the Entrance Class, and I am currently in 10th grade. I have visited a lot of countries, and I’ve had the privilege of seeing a diverse range of cultures and environments, which is part of the reason that I enjoy hearing perspectives of society that are different from my own. This will be my third conference chairing and my fourth MUN conference altogether. The MUN program has taught me so much about politics and has prompted me to educate myself even more in my free time. It has impacted my view on the world, which further proves the point as to how important this program is for young minds. Besides MUN, I have tried many sports and hobbies in the past, but recently I have been dedicating my time to badminton and running.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. I am looking forward to seeing you all in November!

Sincerely,

Marina Leitner
