Dear Delegates of the Political Committee,
I am honored to welcome you to this year's BERMUN conference!
This year's topic is Resilient and Sustainable Development to Combat Climate Inequality.
The climate is the basis of our existence. Over recent years, climate change has become a major issue all over the world, and with that comes climate inequality. While more economically developed countries (MEDCs) emit almost twice as many greenhouse emissions, less economically developed countries (LEDCs) often face much greater effects from climate change, such as famine, population displacement, and natural disasters. The theme of this year’s BERMUN aims to further explore climate inequality and to find a sustainable way to address it.
Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. It creates a vicious cycle, in which natural disasters push LEDCs further into long-term setbacks. LEDCs lack the infrastructure or the economy and the funds found in MEDCs to adapt. One of the topics that we will be discussing in our committee is “Improving natural disasters early warning systems”. These are commonly used in regions prone to natural disasters, as a way to provide advanced notice, giving citizens some time to get to shelter. They are crucial tools for building resilience to climate change, but the limited technical capacity, lack of infrastructure and data gaps in some countries hinder the technology from being most effective. I look forward to seeing the solutions you come up with!
On a more personal note, I am a 9th grader at the John. F Kennedy School. I was born in London and lived there for 5 years before moving to Berlin. I speak English, Spanish, and German, and this is my second year in my school's MUN program and first as chair! Outside of school, I enjoy running, playing violin, and hanging out with my friends. I look forward to meeting you all in November!
Sincerely,
Nuria Bullion
