Dear Delegates,

Welcome to the 35th annual BERMUN Special Conference 2026!

This year's theme, ‘‘Resilient and Sustainable Development to Combat Climate Inequality,‘‘ speaks to an important global issue, climate change, and the unequal impact it has on countries. Climate change impacts most countries very differently. Some countries are more equipped to deal with the effects than others; however, those countries that are impacted the most are typically those that contribute the least. To overcome this challenge, we must put in place sustainable, long-term approaches that build resilience and promote international cooperation.

On that note, the Special Conference will address the issue of climate-induced migration and environmental degradation in LEDCs. Climate change is creating an increase in climate-induced displacement through rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and a decrease in access to essential resources. Many LEDCs are experiencing environmental exploitation caused by external economic interests, in the form of deforestation, unsustainable extraction practices, and pollution. These actions result in long-term damage to the environment, a decrease in biodiversity, and a decrease in access to clean water and arable land, which will cause LEDCs to face problems with their ability to develop economically, thus creating poor living conditions for people. LEDCs often find themselves in a situation where there will be short-term economic growth at the expense of long-term sustainability; therefore, there is a strong connection between climate and inequality and environmental degradation, both of which are examples of environmental change and represent significant political and social issues.

To briefly introduce myself, I am 16 years old, born in New York City, and moved to Berlin when I was 1. While this is my first time chairing a committee, my experience in MUN has given me a good understanding of structured debate and working together toward shared solutions. Outside of MUN, I enjoy going to the gym and boxing. I encourage all delegates to come well prepared, think critically, and stay open-minded.

I look forward to meeting all of you in November!
