Dear Delegates of the SOCHUM committee,

Welcome to the BERMUN2 conference!

In light of this conference's topic, “Decolonize.”, SOCHUM will discuss the idea of addressing post-colonial ethnic divides.

Although the definition of decolonization is, according to the Oxford dictionary, “the action or process of a state withdrawing from a former colony, leaving it independent”, it entails much more than that. Colonial rule has long-standing effects on nations, still impacting institutions and governing systems today. International institutions need to foster an inclusive debate and discussion to help provide solutions, as well as a platform for dialogue when it comes to the complex issue of decolonization.

The end of colonialism in all but 17 NSGTs (Non-Self-Governing Territories) marks a new stage of development for many nations. But the post-colonial systems and structures that stay in place continue to exacerbate ethnic inequalities, both within the nation itself and on an international scale. By discussing and identifying these, the SOCHUM committee will find solutions and support long-term stability by fostering ethnic equality and social cohesion. We will continue to foster diverse dialogue, support inclusive policies, and recommend policies in states to help mitigate and ease ethnic divides.

On a more personal note, I am 16 years old and an 11th grader at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin. In my free time, I enjoy dancing and spending time with friends! Outside of politics, I’m quite passionate about women’s rights and community service, things I like to actively partake in in my personal life. My MUN journey began at the beginning of 10th grade, where the aspect of being able to debate about real and current issues on a global scale piqued my interest, and I quickly became invested in the program! This will be my fifth conference overall and second as a Student Officer.

I look forward to seeing you in February!

Sincerely,

Susannah Skinner
